Iowa Tops Purdue 24-10 In B1G Opener

Iowa had to bus to West Lafayette and the long ride apparently took its toll on the Offense which had its second consecutive slow start. But the Hawkeyes Defense showed up the entire 60 minutes and stymied the Boilermakers in a dominant performance. Iowa only allowed Purdue 56 yards in the 2nd Half and surrendered only 3 points the entire game. Purdue’s other score came on a 1st Half pick-6 thrown by QB C.J. Beathard, who started his first game as a Hawkeye. Jake Rudock dressed and was available but still hindered by the hip pointer he suffered late in the 1st Half against Pittsburgh. Safety John Lowdermilk had 2 picks late in the 4th Quarter to help seal the victory, and the Hawks also had 4 sacks and pressured QB Danny Etling all day long.

Iowa’s Offense was inconsistent in the 1st Half, Beathard struggled a bit, too many passes were dropped, and the running game was slowed by Purdue’s Defense. But things started to click in all phases the last 30 minutes, and the Hawkeyes ended up scoring 24 unanswered points with several impressive, balanced, clock-eating drives. Iowa finished with 420 yards of total offense, 175 on the ground, 245 passing and had possession time nearly 10 minutes more than Purdue. Beathard finished with 17 completions on 37 throws and 1 TD and a QB rating of 105.1.

This was Iowa’s first game this season where the margin of victory was more than one possession, and the victorious Hawkeyes head into their first of two bye weeks before hosting Indiana on Homecoming at Kinnick Stadium. Who will be Iowa’s starting QB in that game is definitely open to debate. Head Coach Kirk Ferentz got his 112th victory at Iowa which ranks 10th all time in Big Ten History. Iowa is 4-1 overall, 1-0 in B1G play.
