Iowa Stumbles At Maryland, Loses 38-31

In the first ever football game between the Hawkeyes and Terrapins, Iowa started fast and finished fast with a furious late 4th Quarter comeback bid coming up just short. But in between the Hawkeyes were out-played and out-coached on Offense and Defense. Penalties and turnovers also played a significant factor in this game as did a stiff wind, all of which resulted in Iowa dropping out of a first place tie in the Big Ten’s West Division.

Iowa’s Offense failed miserably to exploit a Maryland Defense that has been susceptible to the run. The Offensive Line turned in its worst performance of the season, and QB Jake Rudock rarely had time to pass as he was constantly hurried and sacked four times. He also threw a Pick 6 in the 1st Quarter for Maryland’s first score after Iowa’s hot start. The Offense and Rudock came to life late in the game, leaving many Iowa fans to wonder where it had been hiding most of the rest of the game. The Hawks finished with 433 yards in Total Offense - 317 passing but only 116 rushing (96 yards below the 212 average the Terrapins had been surrendering on the ground in their first six games).

The Hawkeyes’ Defense failed to contain Maryland’s running game and its dual-threat Quarterback C.J. Brown prior to his injury early in the 2nd Half. Brown finished with 99 yards net rushing out of the Terrapins 418 yards in Total Offense, while Maryland’s QBs completed 17 of 33 passes for 206 yards while throwing two interceptions. They were also sacked four times.

Iowa scored a TD late in the 3rd Quarter on a short Mark Weisman run, his 2nd of the game and his 4th straight 2-TD game. The Hawkeyes then rallied late in the 4th Quarter for a touchdown, on-side kick recovery, and a field goal to pull within 7 points. But a second on-side kick attempt failed and a last minute-drive was sniffed out near midfield.

Possession time was even, although Iowa ran 87 plays to Maryland’s 79. The Hawkeyes had too many quick three and outs on Offense plus had two very costly fumbles that directly led to 10 points for the Terrapins. Iowa entered this game leading the B1G in fewest penalties while Maryland was second in that category - but the Hawkeyes finished with 7 penalties for 65 yards, several coming at crucial times. Maryland ended up with 6 penalties for 50 yards.

Iowa goes into its second bye week 5-1 overall, 2-1 in the B1G. Maryland has the identical record in its first year of play as a Big Ten member. The Hawkeyes will heal and try to get better before facing the Northwestern Wildcats in Kinnick Stadium on November 1. Iowa will probably have to win out to win the West Division and play in the B1G title game - unlikely but certainly within the realm of possibility.
